Gianicolo Hill

The Janiculum, rising about 88 metres above the Tiber on Rome's west side, above the Trastevere district, is not one of the traditional seven hills of Rome but offers one of the city's widest free panoramas. From the main terrace at Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, the view sweeps over the rooftops of central Rome to St Peter's Basilica, Castel Sant'Angelo and, on a clear day, the dome of the Pantheon. A cannon on the hill fires a single blank shot every day at noon, a tradition dating back to 1847. The hill is reachable on foot from Trastevere or the Vatican side.
