Areopagus Hill

The Areopagus, or Hill of Ares, is a low rock outcrop northwest of the Acropolis that in antiquity gave its name to Athens' council of elders and its homicide court. Tradition holds that the apostle Paul addressed the Athenians from this rock, an episode recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. Steps cut into the stone, worn smooth and slippery over centuries, lead to a bare summit with no railings, from which the Acropolis and Parthenon rise directly ahead and the city spreads out below, making it a free and popular sunset viewpoint.
